I delivered as a class lecture at the New England Baptist Theological Institute in West Bridgewater, MA on January 29, 2007.

The Purpose of a singles ministry is to draw people into a closer relationship with Christ and to develop their role in the area of service within their local church.

1.      Because Singleness is Not A Sin (I Corinthians 7:1)

Objection:  It is not good for the man to be alone
Answer:  Genesis 2:18, Jeremiah 16:2

This verse is a positive not a prohibition
Paul wishes more were single (vs. 7)

Objection:  Prolonged Singleness is nothing more than immaturity
Answer:  I Corinthians 7:2,9

2.      Because the Whole Church Needs to be Addressed (Rom 12:15-16)

Objection:  Nothing prohibits singles from participation except themselves
Answer:  That is not a ministry attitude

The fact is many singles feel left out of their church
There is a focus on the family

Objection:  Why divide the Church?
Answer:  Why do we have youth groups, senior saints, or Sunday School?

3.      Because Part of the Body Aches (I Corinthians 12:25-27)

Objection: Singles simply need to get over their worry and rest in the Lord
Answer:  Again, not a ministry attitude.

Many singles are struggling
“…single people struggle more with loneliness, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, lower self-mastery and are at much greater risk of suicide …”

The World offers much temptation
The goal is to give attention to the problem, fix it, and the result should be a unified body working together.

4.      Because A Vast Resource is Untapped (I Corinthians 7:32-35)

Objection:  Couples are needed to staff and build ministries
Answer:  Paul Disagrees

89 million unmarried adults in the United States as of March 2004.  53 million had never been married.  22 million were currently divorced.  14 million were widowed.
48% and 44% - The proportions of American women and men, respectively, who were 15 and over and unmarried in 2000
13.3 million - The number of people, ages 25 to 34 in 2000, who had never been married; this number represents 35 percent of all people in this age group. The total of never-been-marrieds among the 35-to-44 age bracket was 6.9 million or 15 percent
13.9 million - The number of widowed people in 2000
19.8 million - The number of currently divorced people in 2000
12 million - The number of single parents in 2000
51 million - The number of households in 2000 — nearly 5 in 10 — maintained by unmarried men and women.  http://www.unmarriedamerica.org/usaweek/intro.htm

Singleness should be a time of undistracted service and devotion
You already saw the statistics.

5.      Because Fellowship is A Good Thing (Pro. 27:17)(Titus 2:2-4)

Objection:  Singles Ministries are just  over-grown youth groups
Answer:  They don’t have to be

What a joy it is to have someone who understands
Being single in college is different than being single after college
Singles can be of any age

6.      Because God’s Church Should Support Marriage (Hebrews 13:4)

Objection:  Singles’ ministries are just match-making services.
Answer:  What is wrong with that? What better place is there to find a spouse?

Within the confines of the local church, there is accountability, reliablity and a safe atmosphere to explore spiritual growth.
